Question: Is it lawful for parents to charge rent before I am 18?

Answer: Yes, parents may charge their child rent for living premises before the child eighteen years old. While it may sound improper or unfair, such practice is governed by Arizona Law (Revised Statutes Chapter 10, which is landlord & tenant law, and parent & child law, including Arizona law governing child abuse (ARS ยง13-3623)).

Provided that the child has the means or ability to contribute to the costs of his own care and support, including costs for shelter, and provided that such contribution is reasonable, it would probably be acceptable to assess a child costs relating to rent. In the event that the child is unable or unwilling to pay rent to the parent(s), the parents may have remedies or discipline which they may seek or impose, which also must be reasonable and which may not amount to child abuse under the law.

I agree this is a horrible. My parents started charging me rent when I was 17. They originally wanted me to pay $200 a month at 17 and while still in high school. I pretty much made it known that I wasnt going to pay that much. Luckily I got the victory (if you can call it that) and I only have to pay $100 a month. They constantly remind me too that I'm so lucky and they should be charging me more. They say that $100 is nothing and it would cost me a lot more to live on my own. Well $100 a month is a lot when you work 6 months a year part time (I worked at a ski lodge), have car insuran

I am 18 and I do have to pay rent at my parent's house. I only have a part time job because i am still in school. I think parents shouldn't charge their kids for rent as long as they're still in school. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!!! and i still have 2 save 4 college and i have to pay car insurance and a phone bill!!!

Hey I agree that this is a horrible law. I live in Canada, and I am forced to pay $150 a month to live in my own family house. I don't think this is right, because as others have said, on top of that I need to buy everything else for myself. On top of it all, I have regular chores and take care of the house. Maybe I'm just angry because I have to give my hard earned money to my mother each month, but under the age of 18, parents or guardians are legally responsible for their children. Does this not include housing? And is it fair to demand money to uphold their legal responsibility? I
