Question: I was arrested for shoplifting from a K-Mart and I was left with a ticket to show up in court well i guess thats what it is but im wondering what is it that i can get like time or punishment do i get for such a crime so what will happen because i've heard many stories but dont know what might happen to me please i would like to know that consequences well thank you bye.

Answer:

There are many factors that determine what will happen and what type of punishment you will receive after being convicted of shoplifting. These factors include the value of the property shoplifted, the age of the person convicted (adult or minor), the past criminal record of the person convicted, the decisions of the prosecutor and court, etc. (ARS 13-1805).

For example, if the value of the property was worth more than $2,000 then it is a class 5 felony (up to 1 1/2 yrs in prison); if the property was worth $250-$2,000, then it is a class 6 felony (up to 1 yr in prison); if the property was worth less than $250, then it is a class 1 misdemeanor (up to 6 months in prison or $2,500 fine). (ARS 13-1805). But, other factors can change these punishments.

You should contact a lawyer to help you with your specific case, or ask the court for an appointed attorney.

i just got caught shoplifting my first and last time. I got a ticket and a court summons, I dont know whats going to happen. It is my first offense and it was under 35$. I know it was stupid, and I have learned my lesson, but everyone makes mistakes, everyone. And I just hope theres a way to get this taken off my record, like getting it switched to a disorderly conduct? Dose the court appoint you a lawyer? And how much do you think the fines are? The cop told me to bring atleast 700$ in cash, I dont really have that and I really dont wanna tell my mom or dad, but I also dont want to go to jail

I got caught shoplifting, and my friend too because he touched the clothes. In CA they told me even ripping off a tag is consider a crime because it's "damaging property". it's my first time, and i have no criminal records.

I work in Asset Protection at a major retailer and my company has zero tolerance for shoplifters! We as a company press charges on anyone and everyone from minors to grandmas. It doesn't matter if it's 5 dollars or 1000 dollars, you go to jail and will have to explain yourself to the Judge. Most first timers result in fines and shoplifting school but not true in all cases. Repeat offenders or aggressive shoplifters will get jail time and/or State Felonies.

I am a Loss Prevention Manager myself, (someone who catches shoplifters) and for a first time offense, it isn't something to get too worked up about. If you are a minor at the time of the offense you have no danger of it being on your adult record. The store can and probably will come after you for a small amount of civil damages resulting from the crime as well. While it's far from the most serious thing in the world, it is a very serious offense and you should definately make much wiser decisions next time.
