Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think 13 year olds should be able to get a job because now is the time when your parents are telling us to earn your own money but we cant becasue the labor age is 16!!! 13 years old is old enough!!

Yes, I am 13 and I personally think that they should change the law to accept 13 year olds. 13, 14- there really isn't much of a difference. The law should be made to accept teenagers, which means ages 13 and up. But really, does the government just like even numbers or something? Is thirteen still considered an unlucky number? My family recently put an addition on our house and we're currently very short on money. Even when I do babysit my sister or do work around the house, I don't get any money. Money to pay for even the simplest things, like for a book of stamps. We ARE old enough to work.

Im 13 nd i want to get a job becuz i don't get alowence nd plus i hate askin ma parents for money everytime i need sumthin. I would feel better if when i wanted to buy sumthin i could jus take money out of ma pocket nd pay for it. What is da difference between 13 nd 14 nd 15 who cares we act da same we are teenagers. If they tell us that we are grown nd that we have to be responsible then why is it impossible for us to get a job. We can work in sumthin easy like tutorin or babysitting or even fixin files. Well thnx bye

im 13 years of age and believe that i am mature enough to do a job and i understand fully why people think only 14 and overs should be aloud a job and thats because the youth of today is 13 year olds that get money to smoke do drugs but they have let us down because we aint all like that so let us have a chance to prove ourselves as mature young adults if it dont work out then we have let ourselves down no one else
