Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think that 12 year olds should be able to get a summer job. Just because I am 12 that means that I don't need money. 12 year olds are just as capable as 14 year olds! I can't get any kind of job because people say that I am to YOUNG! I think that they need to change the law and let at least 12 and over work!

I beleive the government should stop protecting us so much and let our parents do it. I absolutly need a job to pay for college and a car. Not games or anything but an education and I dont understand why we cant get a job I know someone who was 13 driving to work in his own car and going to and managing a small farm. We have a right to work some of us have to in order to live.

I may be slightly biased here as I am 13, but I really would like a job. I can see why they don't want us working in like shops or garages or that but what about cafes, restaurants, you know? It's completely unfair. I think you should be able to go for a job after your 11th birthday, and be given the chance to show ou are mature enough. Come on, Mr Blair, you were 13 once!!!!!!!!

hey im 13, and i dont think it is fair if only 14 year olds are allowed to work, i've noticed that alot of 13 year old are more responsible then 14 year olds...i want to earn my own money, i never get to go shopping really so it would be a good excuse if i could and i wouldnt be using my parents money, anyways it would teach me how to handle money responsibly and how to deal with people and be able to control my job when im younger and i could get a head start, well thanks for listening to what i have to say, i just hope the law does
