Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think its ridiculous that we can not work. We want to earn our own living and money to do the stuff we want. Im sure most parents wouls agree that there kids should be earning money and not spending there's. It will teach us the responsibility of life and money, and Bush should listen to the younger people who he 'looks' out for. Because we are the next generation

I thionk that 13-year olds should be able to hold jobs. I don't get an allowance but I get some money here and there. I am currently enrolled in college classes which consist of 3 modules. I would like to find another way to earn money besides berry picking for the whole summer. I would say there should be child labor laws, but I don't think that 13-year olds are children.

I am 13, and like the rest of you, I would like a job. However, after reading a select few of your comments, I recall someone made a fair point. Let's say they DID pass a law allowing 13 year olds to work. Then some 12-year-olds would say, "Hey!!! We are just as, or more mature then those 13-year-olds, so we deserve jobs, too! Don't make me out to be against you, I need a sufficent cash flow myself, but let's face the facts, guys. A majority of us want jobs so we can buy things we want, but the 13-yr.-olds who are using the money to support their family, or their future careers, deserve jobs.
