Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think 13 year olds should be able to work. If 14 year olds can work we should be able to work too it's only one year away. We are not going to change in one year. It feels bad when every 14 year old has workrd for their money and can get anything they want and we have to wait for birthdays christmas and all that. We should be able to work for our own money and buy our own stuff. The job will help us be more responsible.

Im thirteen and i think teens our age of thirteen should be allowed to get a job because we just turned a teen ager and we need responce ablilities and we can see what real work is and i think it should be ok to bag groceries or soming like working at the farmer market carrying boxes or picking out bad fruits and veggies.

i wat a job so i can stop asking my mom and dad for money but if i go to fast food place you get treated like you are 2years old and plus you only get paid $5.50 an hour so i think the law should be if you know how to do the job you should be able to do it

My parents dont' buy me my clothes unless I really, really need them, and it can be hard to find children to babysit. I definitely think 13 year olds should be able to work because it's not fair. We can get what we need, but not what we want, and I think that if we are willing to work, and are serious about it, we should be able to have a job. Not even a big time job, just a job at like a tanning bed or something. Even if we need parental consent. I think it's very important for 13 year olds to have the option of working and I find it extremely unfair that they don't. I know other ones agree.
