Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think thirteen year olds should be able to get a job. We're just as capable of doing it as fourteen year olds are. If we have responsibilities of going to school, and saying no to drugs, cigarretes, etc. then we should have the same responsibilities for a job. It's one year apart, I mean come on, one year!! I don't think we're going to change much in one year! I think we should have a poll, of "Do you think 13 year olds should be able to get a job?" I'm tired of waiting until my birthday or Christmas to get something I really want, I want to be able to get it myself, with my money!

i believe that as long as you are a teen even if your thirteen then you should be able to get a job cause if a 14 year old can work why can't i

this is ridiulous the only job that thirteen year olds can get it baby sitting and paper route there is always all theese little rants on how we should be responsible at a young age well if the only job`s were aloud to do is babysitting and paper route how does that teach us any responsibilty it`s not like saying ohh yeah i threw around newspaper`s is gonna help us at all when we need a real job in the real world. it`s simly unfair and somthing should be done about this problem it`s one year diffrence if sombody is willing to give up their time to work at a youg age it should be allowed.
