Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

That is so unfair! Like there is this candy shop where I wanted to work but they said I couldn't if I was younger than 13. I also like babysitting. I want to do that. I also don't really have anything to do this summer. Then your parents say "Why didn't you sign up for something?" I get $10 a week for allowence but I have to use my own money to pay for the movies and friends gifts and stuff like that. I know this is kinda long, but a lot of kids under 14 would actually like to have a job. Why do they do it? I read a job application once and it said we won't deny you the job because of AGE.

Hi im 13 and i agree with ever other 13 year old. You parents should be glad that we don't want to be in the house playing video games, ignoring you while you tell us to take out the trash and other things. Pluse i really hate asking my mama for money. Even though you might think we're younge, but if we can work at library's we should be able to get a job at some place's.
