Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

It's not fair that 13 years old cant have jobs i mean 14 year olds are just one year ahead of us and we 13 year olds get bored alot and need money for college and if we cant work we will be mad at you because we wont have enough money for college. I mean we are intelligent sometimes but we need to work now to get ready for a real job mabey u should make a place for 13 year old to work and make money. :) Please!!!

I live with a single mother with a aunt who has scoliousis and still works with a brother of ADHD. Every time when I have a baby-sitting job, my mom needs the job so we can pay the bills and stuff. So I have no way of getting money. I basically need to get my own clothes, shoes, and things that I truely need. But if I got a real job, at a real store, resurante or whatever, I would be having the things that I need without depending on my mom and aunt to get it for me. 13 year old kids need to socialize to. But to be able to do that, they need money. And so I think 13 yro's need a real job!

I think that everyone that is atleast 12 should be able to work.Atleast 12 years old that are responsiabe for everything. And if you don't believe them that their responsiable you could just ask their parents or their friends, but mainly their teachers, just to see if they get all their work done in time. plus if the kids aren't doing a good job in school you could give them warnings before you fire them. So please let the responsiable pre-teens work or atleast get a job.Cause I'm 13 and I can't wait another year of not working.

I think it would be much more fair if 13 year olds could get a job also. Most 13 year olds like me go hang out at at the mall and we love to shop. We also have school and church functions that we usually have to pay for, and our parents can't afford to pay for all of our things. I have a "passion for fashion" and i really like to but clothes, shoes, ect., but my parents don't have enough work for me to do or enough money to pay me enough for me shop and do stuuf as much as i would like to.
