Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think 13 years old should be able to have a part-time job. We young teens have things we want or need and our parens just can't pay for it all. This should be called the shopaholic teen syndrome. Parents these days don't have that kind of money to be buying this and that a child wants. We have proven our responsibily. Young teens also have energy and are willing to work hard. Plus, young teens as 13 year olds, aren't really picky for the amount we get paid. I mean, we will probably even take $5 an hour, well as long as it is a considerable amount. So, please listen to me, let us work!
