Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

The government are getting sick and r=tired with the people that are living off the dole and are trying to encourage people to get jobs, but we're not allowed to start work at 13. If we don't motivate ourselves at a young age then we never will.

Hey, im 13 and desperately need a job. My mum is trying very hard to make money for the whole family and still needs to pay lots of bills. I reckon 13year olds hav the right to do what they want. I feel sorry for my mum having to always give me money when i want to buy something.
