Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I really dont see why 13 year olds cant get jobs. People should see that it is great for a 13 year old to want to get a job because most teens are lazy. Most teens like to sit at home and do nothing while others are willing and wanting to work to learn how to be independent and make our own money. I have been wanting a job since I was 12 and now I have to wait another year and who knows what laws might change and say that we can't work until we are 16 or 17. So if we are willing to work then people should REALLY give us 11-13 year olds a CHANCE!

I don't understand why 11-13 year olds can't get jobs.People say it's because we're not as responsible as 16 year olds, but you don't see many of us out there drinking and smoking.I'm turning 12 this weekend and I'm already looking for a job as a designer and my parents think it's fine as long as they approve with what the manager says. Also, people in the U.S. are always talking about how far behind in student knowledge we are from Japan and other countries. If they want us to be smarter, than why are they going against us getting jobs when for most people the only other choice is watching T.V.
