Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I don't see why we can't get a job. In fact I am much smarter then some 14 year olds. If I don't get a job this summer, I think I'm gonna go nuts! I don't know how many times I have to hear "sorry but we don't have enough money for that right now" and once I try to get money, I find out I have to wait another year. If you parents want us to earn money, then let us. You sometime might hear "then go sell some lemonade" well would you buy lemonade from a guy that is fully grown and maybe taller then you or from a kid that is small and has a cute little smile on their face. Think about it.
