Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I have been looking for a job for the past week, or so, all the places around my house that I can work only hire 16 years and older.  It is really getting on nerves! I'm very mature for my age, and I really don't think it's fair for a 14 year old to be able to work and not a 13 year old.

its not fair that 13 year olds cant get jobs. i am a resonsible teen and i want to be able to prove that i am resopnsible. i dont see any reason why 13 year olds cant get jobs. if it is because they're not mature enough, well i know 13 year olds that are mor resonsible than 42 year olds.

I am 12, and in 7th grade. I dont see why we can't get jobs or 13 year olds. I turn 13 in the summer so at least let 13 year olds have jobs. I can certinly wait tell this summer. WE should be treatd fairley too.

when i was 12 i called a whole bunch of places to see the age of which they will hire, the results were: 15,15,15,16,15, and so on...i dont understand..if we are willing to ask for a job then maybe we should be considered! its crazy having to wait until your 15 or 16 to get a job, its not like we are 13 and wanting a career..we just want money to save for college or to spend a little money for ourselves at the mall.its not fair!
