Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

This law I think is unfair.I am 13 and am a hardworker and still a good student in school, but I need a job.you can't summerize what someone is like by saying there age or age-group. Each person is different and works differently and has a different maturity for thier age. Why can't those with hard work ethics and high maturity levels work? I'm not saying that you should go and put a 5 year -old to work..but I am saying that maybe the age level should vary a bit. Maybe you should drop down the age level to 12. Well thanks for letting my share my point of view. Nicole
