Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I feel the same way as every body esle here. I want a job so badly but i'm too young. I have tried everything and nobody is willing to hire. I wish there were special jobs that young teens (13's) could get so that we could have money in our pockets and not depend on our parents. Is there some way that we can get a job at this age.

Yeah, I think 13-year-olds should be able to work, as long as they can maintain a steady job and keep up on their schoolwork. Though the downside is that if you have a job, your parents might take advantage of that and completely stop buying things (necessities like pencils, pens, binder paper, and food that only teenagers eat)for you and you defy your purpose of being able to buy what you want with your own money. Unless, of course, if you can get a really good paying job. It teaches teenagers, especially ones who were spoiled during earlier childhood, to be more independant.

I think there should be jobs for kids my age becasue it would help us later on in life-we could earn extra money- and it would keep us busy so we would not have time to do things like get involved with drugs
