Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I want a job too! I know I'm mature enough. My parents won't buy me anything unless They think I absolutely need it. I can't even get a babysitting job because no one I know needs one. I want to be able to buy things on my own;not always depend on mom and dad. How about you?

Though alot of 13 year olds are not ready for a job, some of us are mature and responsible enough for one. Maybe not all of us can be held under the stereotype of lazy not working teenagers. employers should look for who is capable and maybe look into them. Some of us need a steady income not just here and there jobs.If more people realised teens could work we could have jobs. My parents wont just give me money to play with, Im raedy and I need a job.

I think it sucks. All this child labor law crap. I've always needed a way to earn money, and I have that stupid conflict with the law. There are many things I want to get, and I need to learn the actual value of money...I mean, what if i want to save some money for college or visiting other place... I mean come on people, Kids need to learn the importance of money and jobs and how to deal with real life.. My government teacher says that it would be great to let the youth practice real life experiences. REMOVE THE LABOR LAW!!
