Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

The law was first made to help 13 and unders because they were forced into unsafe conditions and horrible jobs. Its no longer like that today, but still dangerous at most jobs such as a fast food restaraunt. We may also think we are mature and know waht we are doing but I thought the same thing when i was 8 and now I think I was a fool then. Even if the law changed to allow 13 year olds to work, then the 12 year olds would say same thing about how come they cant work. The law is there most likely for a good reason and its not that far till 14 anyway.

I know that I am VERY responsible because I take care of my two 7 1/2 month old nephews, 5 year old nephew, and another of 9 years old and I do it by myself without nobody's help. I think adults that are employing teenagers should give 13 year olds and chance to prove them wrong, that they can be responsible and work hard just like any other 18 year old would do. Majority of the 13 year olds in the state of Texas want to get a job for getting money for themselves (clothes, accessories, shoes, etc.) and will work hard for earning their money. I SAY GIVE US A CHANCE, PLEASE!!! :)

being 14 doesnt help. most jobs take 16 year olds and up so keep complaining but you all have a long way to go. just deal with it like everyone else is. i'm stuck at giant everyday in the summer bagging groceries for $5 an hour. do whatever you can like baby sit or walk dogs. i'm dealing with it and you all should too.
