Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think its not fair that thirteen-year-olds can't work. Why don't you make a law that people are allowed to work since they're thirteen? I'm turning 14 soon and I haven't ever worked anywhere. My parents are both working but we have a very big family(10 ppl)so we don't have money for alot of stuff. I want to work so my family would have at least a little bit more money. I haven't ever baby-sitted anyone except my siblings, I'm second oldest so I'm pretty good at lots of stuff. I wish I could at least do SOMETHING for my family and I can't!

its not fair that 13 year olds are not allowed 2 work if u look on the internet they just say baby sitting washing cars and dog walking these are jobs i wuld have done wen i was 8. i think that form 12 upwards should b allowed 2 b a cleaner for a shop or stack shelves or office work n the computer. Just cuz we are younger we are still capable of doing things that a fourteen year old would b able 2 do! x x x

I think that by the law stating the the minimum age to have a job at 14 is right. I am 13 and i wish to have a job, but This law gives us time to grow up and wait for a year or two. When you turn 13, you just got out of being a baby and you are only in the 7th grade, worry about making it to high school, then worry about getting a job. Me, as a 13 year old, feels that i should have a job, and by making money the hard way shows your parents about being responsible! but wait a couple of years. that is what i think!
