Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think that children at the age of 13 should work because they get to a point when they need to start buying their own stuff because there parents can not afford it. Right now I wish I could get a job so that I do not have to get a tongue lashing when I ask my parents for money. Since 13 year olds are facing more grown-up things everyday and are forced to deal with adult issues, why can't they earn money for themselves.

Yeah it's not fair. All of my friends have jobs and they are 14. I should be able to work too. I think I should have the right just as anyone else to work at a job that I want to. I need money just as much as everyone else.

I think that people who are 13 can work somewhere. Like if your parent owns a business. I know you probably can work there because it is your parent. I just want to work somewhere good like a restraunt so I can get paid. I think 5 dollars would be enough for me. I just want to have money to buy new stuff or save in a bank account. Well I'm just trying. Soon I will be 14 (on June 1) so maybe by then I can work somewhere.

I think that a 13 year-old should be able to work if they want to! I'm not a girl who wants to babysit. Most of the time I'm babysitting relatives. That's enough for me! I want a job where I can get money and do what I love best at the same time!
