Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

Hey.I am 14 years old and in Tennessee you have limited places to work.I think 14 and up kids should be able to work wherever. It isn't right if a 14 year old kid wants to work and she or he can't because you have to be 18 years or older.

I'm tired of looking for a job and nobody wants to give me one. Everybody says I'm to young. I think It's not fair we all need money. For different stuff like college, clothes, car, and ect... We need to save up for those kinds of things. Mothers don't always have to buy us averything.

I'm 13 years old and I'm tired of asking for money. I want a job but no one will hire anyone under 16 here in Puerto Rico. The law should be changed. It's not fair. And how come no one does anything when we write these type of comments. Instead of just reading them, why not do something for a change....? Signed, I'm broke...
