Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I'm a 13yr old with many things I want to do,that my parents say they won't pay the money for because its a watse. These "wastes" include our middle school dance for 7th and 8th graders,a ticket cost for a convention in Atlanta, and seasonal clothes between my bithday and other holidays,in which I recive gifts. If we were able to get jobs we'd be able to buy what we want and when, not to mention out parents can't say its a waste because "we" would have earned the money ourselves in order to buy that item.

I think 13 year olds should be able to work so we don't need to mooch off of our family and friends, frankly I think the itty bitty lawn mowing jobs just don't cut it and I'm always trying to get money to go do stuff with my friends but it usually costs money, like concerts for instance. I suggest that as long as we have a job permit from the Mayor or something we should be able to have small, part-time jobs at stores that'll allow it.

Our parents are always telling us to show that we're responsible.A job would be the perfect solution. It shows how responsible we can be, we don't have borrow money from them, and we have enough $ to get what we need and want.I'm not saying hire ALL 13 year olds.Pick the most qualified. Some of us are smarter harder workers than the 15 and 16 year olds tou have working now.
