Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I believe 13 year olds should be able to get a job.We are constantly told by our parents to get a job to get our own money but yet its impossible because at the age of 13 we cant get a job. By getting a job at 13 we learn how to be independent and show responsibility. It will show that we are working hard to reach our goals or get what we want!!

I think that it is not right that a 13 year old can't have a job! The working papers should be for the ages of 12 and up. I think they should change that law.

I think that 13 year olds should be allowed to get jobs. Think about today's generation for a start - more kids wanting to go out with their freinds at a younger age but they don't have any money because their parents won't give them any and they can't get a job. It's not fair! If they're mature enough they should be allowed to work - they could just make a law that they needed parents consent (so maybe meet the parents) and then we'd be allowed to work........ I wish I had a job!
