Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

13 year olds should be able to work, it is stupid not to let us work. The only reasons teens shop lift is because we can't work, and because we can't work we can't earn money to buy things. Lots of times our parents don't even give us money to buy things. Lots of us are ready to work and earn our keep.

i think that they should let 13 year olds work. my reason for that is because it's hard for me to ask for money from my parents especially when they are really striked about everything i really want to get a job and i feel as if the people of the united states think that us 13 year olds aren't mature enough, don't get me wrong, i know that some of us 13 year olds are imature, but majority of us are really mature for our age. if you have any comments about my comment please post

you are so right i have had people ask me if i wanted a job and i say yes but when i tell them that i am 13 they say no you are way to young just wait another year or so. i can't wait until i get my permit and then i can go to every place that turned me dowm and i can tell how sorry they should be because i am a really hard worker. i really shouldn't complain i guess because i have had a job before i worked with my boyfriend at the rec. until they found out that he is 16 and i am 13 they throgh me out and told him to stay, that made me real mad and he knew it so he quit he's the best. LOL. Ri

Ever since I was 10, I was ready to have a job. I am very responsible and mature and I don't see why 13 years olds like me can't have a job. If employers would just accept us for who we are, then it would really put an end to the sterio-type of shoplifting teens. I'm tired of waiting to be 14 years old to have a job... I WANT A JOB NOW!
