Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think the law should be changed because when you are 13 you are a teenager and 13 year ols want to work and try to be independent as well.

To whom this may concern, Just to let you all know, I am a very mature 13 year old who keeps her grades up at school. I believe that I, and other 13 year olds that are willing to work should be able to. True, we are still considered kids but, if we feel responsible enough to work and would like to earn money for our family's then, why not. Another thing is, that the society is always arguing about shoplifting teens but, if we had the rights to work and, earn money we would not have any problems with money. I for one, am ready to work, and do not want to wait.

I think that 13 year olds should be able to get a job. The reason is our parents aren't going to give us money until were 15 or maybe 16. I think that they should be able to work on weekends only. But they should hire mature teenagers and people they know will be on time. I have wanted a job so that i can go places with my own money not my parents.

I honestly think that they should let 13 year olds have a job because right now its hard for me and my mom to live since she is disabled and doesn't have a job. Right now I am trying to see if I could get money in anyway to help me and my mom. So I think they should change the law to 13 as long as the person keeps their grades up and is really mature and knows what he or she is doing and or has experience in what they are doing.
