Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think 13 year olds should be able to work.....b/c(because) we wanna earn money to so we can go out and do stuff instead of asking our parents for money and have ony like 5dollars to spend we can have a full paycheck to spend........and all my friends turn 14 before me 2 and they will have jobs and get to go do stuff while I have to stay at home.......and we dont wanna mow lawns and get like 4 or 5 coz thats still not enough......and if you let 13 year olds work it would make us feel that adults can trust us to work and we might treat them with more respect !!!!!!!!!!!! thank you!
