Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

i think kids should be able to work as long as they're 13 and have parental consent. We need cash for other things than just candy and crap if we can start saving now we can have millions by 20 but if we dont start until we're 16 or older it takes hundreds of thousands off what we can make

I agree we do need jobs too, even if we dont have bills to pay, like maybe we might want to buy dinner or something or pay for gas for our parents or buy toys or something like that.

I think that at least 12 and up should be able to get a job. If thay have to pay adult prices at the movies, then they should be able to be treated like an adult and be able to get a job. They expect us to act like adults when they don't even work like one. I don't mean like big jobs, it's just not fair.

I think that thirteen year olds have just as much of a right to hold an occupational position as a fourteen year old. If the legal age is fourteen then why not lower it down to thirteen? It's not as if all of us are preteens and immature. I am trying to do volunteer work because I want to help out my community but it's nearly impossible for me to do so.
