Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

We thirteen year old aren't dum we know how to work a job! Parents should think about how much money they spend on their kids expecially girls because girls like accercories, makeup, shoes, and lots and lots of clothes. I think thirteen year old have the right to have jobs so we can save for college too! People are stupid, thirteens have brains too! We are mature like adults well teenagers and we should be able to prove it!

I think that as a thirteen year-old I should be able to work in a minor part time job. We have arms and legs for waitressing, we can type just as well or better than other teens for office type jobs. As a hardworking thirteen-year-old African American student I make straight A's as member of the National Junior Honor Society and do an extracurricular activity or two and I am very intelligent. I believe if we come together we can help this be changed. And for those of you who think we won't want to go to work are wrong. Thirteen year olds have wants too!
