Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think 13 year olds deserve to have jobs. We dont always want to wait on our parents for money. We would like to be independent and be able t omake our on money and buy what ever we want with it. If we do get a lil stupid job like babysitting and mowing the lawn we either dont get paid or dont get paid enough. IM SO SICK OF THIS!!!

I dont think it makes a BIG difference if a 13 year old gets a job because im 13 right now in 8th grade almost all my friends are older than me and this summer they can get jobs except for me because my birthday is in September

I also think its not right that 14 year olds cant work becase they can do just the same amount of work as anyone else. The only time i can make money is when I mow the lawn which really is a bad job. Teens that put their mind into it should obtain something special.
