Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think kids 14 years or older should be able to work. I have one reason for this. We teenagers should be able to not depend on our parents as much, and prove that we are mature adults. So, we should be able to work so we can have the extra money to buy things for ourselvs.

I think that thirteen year olds should be able to get jobs (within reason, ei, no controlling large pieces of machinery or anything) so long as they and their parents are willing to sign a waiver. Why should big corporaations, or the government care if no one else does?

I'm 12 and I'm turning 13 at the end of this year. And I think that older kids aren't the only ones who want things.
