Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think if a minor proves to their school and parents that they are ready for a job, than an employer should give that minor a fair chance to prove they can do it. After all isn't that what most parents want, their child to show responsibility.

I agree w/all you guys out there and i think we should be able to work at the age of thirteen. I agree with Jim from IL. They should let us work after schools out and keep contact with our grade s and when our average grade is below a B or C which ever one the company chooses you should not be allowed to work till you raise them. It would keep the manager less worried if we were good in school than if we are a trouble maker. But that is just my opinion. Good luck 13 year old teens out there who are with this.

I disagree with the rules my mom says I can Baby sit but that won't get me very far. Us 13 year olds should be allowed to have a real job at this age. but atleast we have a roof over our heads.
