Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I'm 14 and I want a job really bad. My school won't let people get them depending on what there parents' income is. that's so freaking bizarre. I wanna be able to buy my own things and know taht i've earned them myself instead of asking my parents for money to buy it. I wanna save up for college maybe buy a car... you know. geez why does it have to be so hard for us to get simple jobs like waitressing for something of that sort?! It's not fair! grrrr!

I definately think 13 year olds should be able to work because there are people out there that have a hard time meeting ends meet. And besides what's wromg with making a little cash for something that you want, if you worked for it then you've earned it.
