Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think that law is ridiculous because 13 year old kids might not can work on alot of jobs but we can do some jobs. Parents think we to young to handle it and then they turn around and get mad when we ask 4 money. If this law will accept 13 yr old teens to work we wouldn`t have to ask our parents 4 money everytime we want to go out. I can see if it was a 12 yr old but we are 13 TEENAGERS we can handle the job just as well as any other teenager above our age. That is really a injustice law!

Itis so crazy that our parents think we should pay for things on our own and then we aren't old enough to get a job! It makes me angry and I think that the law should change.

Why is it that you have to be like 16 to stamp somebodys hand a Chuck E. Cheeses? Anybody can sing Happy Birthday, dance on a stage, serve food. Is it really that hard I guess you need to be really experienced to do that. SIKE! I wonder if the people who made this law were ever kids? A long time ago kids as young as 8 could have jobs! What happened? I most deffinitly dissagree with this STUPID law. Maby some teens aren't responsible, BUT WE'RE ALL DIFFERENT!! Just because we're young doesn't mean we'll start trouble. We have energy and could get the job done! LET US WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

13 really is an unluky number. We can stack cans on shelves, flip burgers, work cash registers, and a lot more! My parents think I'm too young to have a job! If I had a job I wouldn't have to ask them for money then have to hear them say no. Some adults just don't trust us now a days. They might think that we aren't responsible. They'll never know until they give us a chance! Some laws are unbelieveably STUPID! Are there real jobs that 13 year olds can get! I looked on the internet. Did I overlook? Does what the youth thinks even matter at all?! We need our own money! This is a ludicrous law!!

I understand that 13 year olds can't have some jobs, but a lot of jobs we can do. Just because we are young doesn't mean that we aren't responsible or can't handle the job! There are so many jobs that we can do, but we aren't given the chance.
