Question: Can I receive unemployment benefits or any other type of public assistance if I was fired from my previous job for shoplifting? It's really hard for me to find a job now because of my criminal record, but I need some kind of income to support my family. Any suggestions?

Answer:

A determination of your eligibility for unemployment would be made by the unemployment office http://www.unemploymentoffice.net/State_resources/Arizona.htm.

If they determine that your discharge was due to your own 'misconduct' you may not be eligible for benefits. See http://www.azleg.state.az.us/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/ars/23/00619-01.htm&Title=23&DocType=ARS for the explanation of 'misconduct.'

Here is a list of a few resources for locating jobs if you have a criminal record, although there are others as well: www.phoenix.gov/phxwc  www.fsaphoenix.org www.sjwjobs.org
