Question: Why is the drinking age 21 in the U.S. but 18 in other countries?

Answer: Between 1970 and 1975 many states did lower the minimum drinking age to 18 -20. Then research was done on the impact the lower drinking age had on society (primarily traffic accidents & deaths). With that research, citizen advocacy groups started urging changes to the law that would raise the age one could drink legally. In 1984, the federal government enacted the Uniform Drinking Act which mandated reduced federal transportation funds to those states that did not raise the minimum legal drinking age to 21. Since then, all states raised their drinking age (AMA website 9/03/06.)

I agree with one of the comments I saw, that the driving age should be raised to 18 and the driking age should be 18 as well, if thats when youre considered an adult, thats when you should be able to drive and drink and do everything else, there are many stupid 21 yr olds out there that drive drunk and does stupid crap and alot of minors too but there are also alot of 18yr olds that r more mature than some 21 yrs olds, age doesnt mean anything its who you are.

I am doing a report on this topic but i do belive that the drinking age should be kept at 21 from the things that ive found. But at the same time i agree that when in war let them drink b ut not as much to get them drunk. So please keep the drinkin age at 21.For the sake of the entire country. GO USA

we can go to war, pay the ultimate price for our country, but we aren't aloud to kick back with a beer? I don't know, I think the government should take a long look at that

Being able to drink doesn't make you an adult. It's your maturity level, and actions that make you an adult. If you aren't mature enough to drink responsibly, then you shouldn't drink at all. (There are more immature 18 year olds than immature 21 year olds.) Maybe there should be a maturity test to get a license to be able to drink no matter what age you are.

I think that the drinking age at 21 is ridiculous! i can vote, smoke, get kicked out of my house to live on my own, go to war and fight for the US at 18...but I CANT go to a bar and have a beer! All the stats are crap too.. with a drinking age of 21 we only created more statistics like binge drinking and underage drinking violations its not worth it! but then again the COPS need a job and need something to do i guess...
