Question: What do I need to install on my new 2001 ATV to make it 'street legal'?

Answer: There are Several Arizona laws that govern what items a vehicle must have to operate on Arizona streets. In addition to these state laws, cities might also have specific rules for making ATVs street legal.

Arizona Law (ARS §28-101) defines All-terrain vehicles as a motor vehicle that are all of the following:

(a) Is designed primarily for recreational nonhighway all-terrain travel.
(b) Is fifty or fewer inches in width.
(c) Has an unladen weight of eight hundred pounds or less.
(d) Travels on three or more low pressure tires.
(e) Has a seat to be straddled by the operator and handlebars for steering control.
(f) Is operated on a public highway.

There is specific equipment (ARS §28-964) that ATVs must have regardless. If you are under 18, you must wear a helmet and goggles at all times. It must be equipped with a rearview mirror, a headlamp (ARS §28-924) seat and footrests for the person driving and any passengers (ARS §28-892). Handlebars must be positioned so that the hands of the person driving are not above shoulder height when sitting on the seat. An ATV driven on a highway must be equipped with at least one brake operated by hand or foot (ARS §28-952) which meets specific requirements for braking distance.

You should call the local police to see what other specific ATV laws your city might enforce on city streets.

I believe that they should street legal those fourwheelers 350 and higher they go most speed limits. They can be street legal. If people would stand up for their rights. Scooters have low pressure tires on them if a rock falls off a truck your gone if you hit it. Fourwheelers you will just go on over top of it. They ain't hard to lean on them to go around curves that is only people that hasn't riden them i riden them for 10 years. They are same as a motorcycle even scooter. Everyone stand up for your rights. Enough People that stands. Laws will pass for all states in usa.

While it is illegal to operate ATV's on ANY public roads in KY, enforcement varies widely from County to County. Enforcement is very lax in Harlan County, but just over the mountain in Letcher County the enforcement is pretty strict. And Knott County is probably the worst place to ride in the entire State as they will issue a half dozen citations that total over $1,000 in fines!
