Question: What are the legal requirements for home schooling a child in Arizona?
Answer: The Arizona Law (ARS 15-802) states that every child between the ages of six and sixteen years shall attend a school and shall be provided instruction in at least the subjects of reading, grammar, mathematics, social studies and science. The person who has custody of the child can choose a public, private, charter or home school.
If home schooling is chosen for a child, the adult must file an affidavit of intent with the county school superintendent stating that the child is being provided with instruction in a home school. The affidavit must include: (a) The child's name. (b) The child's date of birth. (c) The current address of the school the child is attending. (d) The names, telephone numbers and addresses of the persons who currently have custody of the child.
There are also particular legal requirements if the adult chooses not to begin home schooling before age eight.
There may be additional requirements involving home schools specific to the county you live in. You should contact the county superintendent of schools to identify what these may be.
