Question: What are the requirements to ride a 49cc motorcycle on the street in Tucson, AZ for both the rider and the motorcycle? i.e. insurance, license plate, brake light, mirrors, etc.
Answer: At a minimum, your street legal motorcycle should have:
- Headlight, taillight and brake light
- Front and rear brakes
- turn signals
- two mirrors
- horn
In addition, you'll need a motorcycle license, helmet and eye protection to ride your motorcycle legally on the road.
Most of your questions can be answered with the Arizona Department of Transportation Motorcycle Operator Manual. It is available online or at any AZ Department of Motor Vehicle office. You can also call the AZ DMV at 1-800-251-5866. Finally, you can find all of Arizona's laws regarding transportation (including motorcycle regulations) in the Arizona Revised Statutes under Title 28 "Transportation."

My driving priveleges have been revoked for one year. I desperately need a 49cc scooter and have my eye on one, but I can't get a clear answer on the legality of operating this machine (30mph) on side streets to get to work. If it's not legal I can't buy it.

In the state of Florida you need a motorcycle license to drive a motor veichle with less than 4 wheels and has 50.1 CC's or more. If it is 50 or under you just need a drivers lecense.

It is classed as a moped by Virginia Law. You don't need a drivers license or license plates. PS you must be 16 or over.

That's too bad. Here in Nevada you don't need a motorcycle license, but do have to have a drivers license. You also need the basics, brakes, lights mirriors etc. But why a motorcycle license? In the land of the free, where's the freedom?
