Question: Is it illegal to take off the catalytic converter on a car?
Answer: Yes. It is a violation of federal law to tamper with the environmental equipment on your car. In addition, it will make it very difficult to pass your state's environmental 'smog' emissions tests.

Just passing this information along. I researched about catalytic converters, because I know there is no emissions testing in my area. According to Environmental Protection Agency's website it is illegal to ever remove a catalytic converter on any car, regardless of the age of the vehicle. There is also a $2,500 fine for individuals for tampering with it. If you take your car into a shop, they are required by law to repair it the way it is supposed to be (with the catalytic converter).

Catalytic converters are a scam! I only put them on my 94 Lincoln town car when I get it inspected., With them off I get 4 MPG more, and WAY better pick up! The may cut some emmisions put they pump out ammonia in to the air! so which is better?
