Question: How long is a Life Sentence?

Answer: A life sentence lasts for the rest of that person's natural life. This means that if the person is convicted and sentenced at 30 years old, he will remain in prison until he dies, which could be 50 or more years. If a person is convicted at age 60 and receives a life sentence, he will remain in prison until his death which could be only 10 or 20 years.

The idea behind multiple life sentances is usually "insurance" to keep them in prison. For example, someone murders 3 people; those are 3 different charges. The prosecutors will typically seek a life sentance for EACH offense, in case 1 of them gets overturned, the other 2 are still in effect.

If a person was sentence to life and not life without parole, do they have a chance on doing a lesser sentence on good behavior and they are not a violent crminal? Will taking up a lot of courses make it better for that person to do less time?
