Speak Up! - View Question #42

    printer friendly version

Question: How many years can you get for stealing a car?

Answer: Arizona Law (A.R.S. § 13-1814) says theft of a car either means someone took a car without permission, and with the intent to deprive the owner of it permanently. Or someone kept a car after the period during which the owner let him use the car. Or someone took a car knowing someone else had stolen it. There is an automatic driver's license suspension upon being convicted of this crime. This offense is a class 3 felony.

A class 3 felony carries a sentence of minimum 2.5 years in prison and a maximum of 7 years in prison. In addition there might be a fine imposed not exceeding $150,000 in addition to compensation to the person whose car was stolen.

The consequences to this crime becomes more severe if there is another crime committed along with it. For instance, if you lead police in a chase, or if you rob a store while you are in a stolen car.
