    printer friendly version

Question: Can a 16 year old dropout?

    Answer:

No. Arizona law (A.R.S. § 15-803) states that 'It is unlawful for any child between six and sixteen years of age to fail to attend school during the hours school is in session.' So, a kid must be over 16 years of age to legally drop out of school.

However, there are some exceptions to this rule (A.R.S. § 15-802). If a kids is 16 or under, he can legally not attend school only if he and his parents prove to the school's principal that:

    1. The child is in such physical or mental condition that instruction is inexpedient or impracticable.

    2. The child has completed high school studies necessary for completion of grade ten.

    3. The child is over fourteen years of age and is, with the consent of the person who has custody of him, employed at some lawful wage earning occupation.

    4. The child is enrolled in a work training, career education, vocational or manual training program which meets the approved standards.

    5. The child is either: (a) Suspended and not directed to participate in an alternative education program. (b) Expelled from a public school.

    7. The child is enrolled in an education program provided by a state institution.

Lots of people are "whining" about needing better education. The big problem I see is that so many ADULTS are bringing this issue up. Minnesota is raising the drop-out age to 18 in the neat future, why let us drop out when we are just months away from graduation? I know a few people who won't even turn 18 until AFTER they graduate. Going to school should be a choice not a law. School just isn't for some people, take me for example, I want to be a blacksmith. It's a little 16th century, I know, but how are Algebra and English going to help me?

I think people should chose if they want to go to school. In this conutry all u learn is nothing in a school but you can learn even more from video games because its fun for you and you just dont have to sit there till school is out. I hope and hope every day there would not be any school the next day that's how bad it is and it needs to stop. When are you gonna use 99% of the stuff they teach you in school? tell me that. I know if i had the choice i would drop out as soon as possible.

i think people have the right to choose if they want to go to school or not because you can still make a living with minimum wage. i went to school and didnt do anything, all i did was sit there and waited until the bell rang and for some reason i had to go to the counselors office because supposedly i had family problems.why not just let me drop out , its too late for me anyways.

Here u have so many kids that drop out per year, but here kids that just skip soemtimes are getting punished way more than the kids that just dont even come so how about just dont even show up and go on with ur life. and ik all these websites and ppl are telling all these kids who wanna drop out that there not gonna have enough money or education to support themselves when they get older
