    Question: Is it required you go to law school to be a lawyer or can you just pass the bar exam and get sworn in?

    Answer: No, you must be a graduate of an approved Law School.

    In order to practice law in the State of Arizona, you must be admitted to the Arizona Bar. Applicants for admission to the Arizona Bar must apply for and take the bar examination and undergo a character and fitness review. The Arizona Supreme Court has ultimate authority to approve admission to the Arizona Bar.

    In addition, there are several requirements that applicants must meet in order to be admitted

    -at the time of the examination is over the age of twenty-one years;

    -is of good moral character;

    -is mentally, emotionally and physically able to engage in the practice of law;

    -is a graduate of a law school provisionally or fully approved by the American Bar Association at the time of graduation;

    -if ever admitted to practice law, is still in good standing, or did resign in good standing.

    For more information on being admitted to practice law in Arizona, see the Arizona Supreme Court's website

    Whoever wrote that you MUST go to law school is mistaken. One can study and take the bar exam without going to law school and there are a few who have done this. However, it is not the preferred route and those who have gone to law school often don't consider these folks as equals. If you have a bachelor's degree, you can study law on your own, and if you pass the bar exam in your state, you are given a lawyer's license. The proof isn't in the sheepskin but in what you know and how well you can represent your clients.
