Speak Up! - View Question #534

    printer friendly version

Question: I am 21, many of my friends are under 21. We get together, and there is alcohol there. I never buy for them, but I don't stop them from underage drinking. If police were to bust a party, would I be in any sort of trouble?

Answer: It is not a crime to be around people who are under 21 years-old and are drinking. There is also no law that requires an individual such as yourself to report underage drinking.

However, you could be charged with a crime if you were providing them with the alcohol, or if they were consuming the alcohol in your residence.

DONT EXIT JUST BECAUSE IM 12. My friends found a cigarette lit on the ground. 1 of them put it in his mouth and then coughed. My friend is only 13 and he breathed in a cigarette. I talked to him and told his parents. We are still friends even thogh he was mad at me for telling on him. Im not saying that u should tell on them, but you should at least talk to them.

I just wanted to say that I am a sophmore in high school and I am now taking drivers Education and I have learned that if you are tempted to drink because of the people that you hang out with then you probably shouldn't hang out with them even though I do hang out with potheads and people that drink....but I know what choices to make and if you are smart that you'll do the same thing.

from experience, if you are at your house you can get in trouble, also if you are at another house and it gets busted the police will ask for the owner of the house which may be a friends and then they will ask for the oldest person, which sounds like you, you can tell them you didnt buy it for them, but are they really going to believe you, i didnt think so.
