    printer friendly version

Question: Is it illegal to be in a gang?

Answer: It is not specifically illegal to belong to a gang. However, any illegal acts committed as a furtherance of the gang, or as gang activities, is subject to stronger criminal prosecutions.

In other words, you can belong to a gang, but if you commit any crimes as a gang member, you will receive more punishment than if you were not a gang member. Your school may have specific gang policies too. In most cases, it is against school regulations to exhibit membership in a gang. You should ask your school principal about gang policies at your school or check your school or district policy manual. Specific school policies vary from school-to-school.

you people are hilarious. why waste your lives for a stupid gang. Be yourself, not a  copy of a copy of a copy. I'm sick of hearing about "gang", "street", "blood" and "family". Go out there, and work for yourself.  cowards..

we talk about gangs because we believe they're wrong, gangs influence everyones lives, not just the members. we're worried about ourselves, our protection, and possibly the protection of are children. we want our children to grow up to be doctors, lawyers, sucessful people. not idiots joining a misguided gang. you're an idiot if you can't understand that. sure, i understand the fact that some of these kids need support and love but last time i checked, if you do something wrong in a gang, they'll turn on you in a second, family's don't do that.

why join a gang? yes, people/kids join them becuase they have broken families, no support system, love, even a hard life, but why join something with violence? violence shouldn't be involved at all.why not go to someone else, a church group, teacher, next door neighboor, or the police? there are better support groups out there than gangs.
