Article IV. Bicycles, skateboards, motorized skateboards and multiuse paths

Section 17-93

You are not allowed to ride a motorized skateboard

• on any sidewalk except for crossing a sidewalk to get to a public or private driveway,
• in a city parking structure or city park, on any public property that prohibits “skateboards,”
• on any road that has 4 or more marked traffic lanes or a speed limit greater than 25 miles per hour,
• on any public or private property that is not held open to public vehicle use without written permission of the owner or person authorized to use property,
• on any sidewalk, bicycle lane, bicycle path or multiuse path.

Section 17-94 General Operating Restrictions

A person operating a motorized skateboard

• must be 14 years of age or older,
• must use a speed that is reasonable and prudent under the circumstances then existing,
• when approaching a sidewalk, bicycle path, bicycle lane, or multiuse path in order to cross shall yield the right-of-way to all other users,
• must not allow passengers when the skateboard in is operation or motion,
• must not attach yourself to the motorized skateboard in any manner or to any other vehicle,
• must not carry any packages, bundles, or articles which prevent you from keeping both hands on the steering mechanism at all times,
• must not allow any person, other than the owner to operate the motorized skateboard without the written permission of the owner,
• must not operate a motorized skateboard that has been structurally altered from the original manufacturer's design,
• must not operate a motorized skateboard in a crosswalk.

Section 17-95 Roadway Restrictions

When traveling at less than the normal speed of traffic, you shall ride as close as practicable to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway, except under the following conditions and when the movement can be made in safety:

1) Overtaking and passing a bicycle or vehicle going in the same direction.

2) Preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private roadway or driveway.

3) Avoiding hazardous conditions ahead in the roadway.

4) If the lane is too narrow for a motorized skateboard or another vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.

• You are not allowed to carry extra fuel in a separate container or alter the fuel reservoir from the original manufacturer's design; this includes physically attaching fuel packs or containers to your body.

• When operation motorized skateboards on the roadway you shall not ride more than 2 abreast.

Section 17-96 Required Safety equipment

• You must use a headlamp emitting a beam and a red rear reflector anytime from sunset to sunrise or any other time when there is not sufficient light to see persons or vehicles on the roadway.
• A head lamp shall emit a white light and be visible from the front at a distance no less than 500 feet, the rear red reflector shall be visible when illuminated by a vehicle head lamp from a distance not less than 300 feet, the rear red lamp visible from a distance of 500 feet to rear may be used in addition to the rear red reflector.
• Your motorized skateboard must have a break that allows you to make a braked wheel(s) skid on pavement.
• If you are under 18 years of age, you must wear a protective helmet at all times.
• You must wear shoes that have a sole and completely cover the feet and toes (no sandals or flip-flops).
