Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I agree that this law is dumb. I think that if you can prove you are mature and responible to have a job at thirteen then you should be able to have a small one. My question is why doesn't anyone get the guts up to start a petition or something to get the law changed or something. It is just a suggestion.

I am dissapointed in this law. Kids should have the right to work if they want to. You people need to find a way to change this law. I want a laptop and I have miss out on two birtdays and Christmases toget it. And it is all because of this law that I can't get it now. Because I could be working right now and get by next month.
