Question: What are the laws concerning jobs for 13-year olds?

Answer: The Fair Labor Standards Act states that the minimum age for employment is 14 years old. A 14-year old that is a full-time student would be allowed to work in a retail establishment as long as the employer has obtained certifications from the Department of Labor. A business could be fined $10,000 for hiring someone under the age of 14. The age requirements for agricultural employment are slightly different.

I think it is strongly unfair. Lots of kids these days need to help with there family's mortage, and most of them want to. It's very hard to get a babysitting job when your at this age. So mabye if the state let us we could actually live our lives. Once agian the law has ruined peoples life. It is not right just because we are younger does not mean we do not have skill. Please rethink your choice. Because the kids these days need a job or they could be out on the street!

I think 13 year olds should have jobs. Why? Im a 13 year old and during summer have nothing to do. People are complainiing about how we spend so much time on the computer. But they need to shut up becaus we have nothing better to do! I tink the minimum age should be 13. I have to buy things and my mom dousnt alwayes give me money. SO give me job or give me death!!!!!!!

I am outraged! This is absolutely...well, its too horrible for words. Although I am 12 now, I will be 13 in a mere amount of a month. Not allowing a paying job at twelve, well that’s a little much, but at thirteen! That’s ludicrous (and I don‘t mean the rapper)! I know that being a month away from 13 I can already see things that I need money for. And, being the true fashionista that I am…those things cost some serious dough! Does Congress honestly think that my parents will gladly fork over $210? Uh...not! I say, Screw the law. This is not the Lowell girls. I could even ans. the phone for $20
