Question: Can employers refuse to hire 14-year-olds if they hire 15-year-olds in AZ?

Answer: Arizona law does not forbid an employer from refusing to hire 14-year-olds, while hiring 15-year-olds.

However, Arizona statues do have various restrictions regarding the employment of children under the age of 16. Arizona Law (ARS §23-232) says that children under 16 are prohibited from working in, about, or in connection with:

-manufacturing
-processing
-laundering or dry cleaning in a commercial laundry
-warehousing
-construction
-boiler, furnace, or engine rooms
-occupations involving work from a ladder, scaffold, windowsill, or similar structures, or places more than five feet in height
-certain activities in retail food or gasoline service establishments.

Another Arizona Law (ARS §23-231) has more restrictions for employment of children under 18 years old.

In addition, there are limitations placed on the hours that may be worked by children under the age of 16. Minors under the age of 16 may not work more than 3 hours per day and 18 hours per week when enrolled in school. When not enrolled in school or when school is not in session, minors under the age of 16 may not work more than 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week.

im 15 and ill be 16 in six months i cant stand the fact all i can have as an income is my allowence and ive had it for a few years now, but i put in my applications to like tops and wegmans and i never even got a call back , i think im a good worker and i used to have a job baling starw and hey and its bull work and for 6 hours id make only 40 dollars i do it for money but i liked it cuz it kept me outa trouble and not doing stupid things like drugs, i wish i could get a job and keep my self busy i bet it would keep kids off the streets if imployers would actualy give us kids a chance....

Parents are always lecturing kids on responsibility, but when a teenager is wants to work, know one will hire them. I think it's wrong, but what can u do?

:Yeah I agree with the last four girls. Their right it shouldn't matter that we're olny 14 or 15 we should be able to work if we're willing to take that responsibility on at an early age. When our schoolwork starts to fail thats when they can question what we do in the real world.

I honestly feel that all employers have a good reason in some cases not to hire 14 and 15 year old kids, maybe because of past experiences. But i also think that it is wrong of them to penalize all of todays youth, because of bad incidents in the past. Everyone should have a fair chance at any career, unless they do not have the education requirememnts. I am 15 years old and have held two jobs since i was 14. In my case i find it very difficult to find jobs. Even the jobs that i have had, i have had great difficulty in getting these positions.
