Question: How long can 16 - year olds work on school days?

Answer: 16- and 17-year olds may be employed for unlimited hours if they are working in a job considered non-hazardous. There are no federal laws restricting the number of hours of work per day or per week for 16 and 17 year olds.

However kids age 14 and 15 may only work outside school hours in certain jobs under the following conditions:

no more than 3 hours on a school day,
18 hours in a school week,
8 hours on a nonschool day, or
40 hours in a nonschool week.

In addition, they may not begin work before 7 a.m. nor work after 7 p.m., except from June 1 through Labor Day, when evening hours are extended until 9 p.m.

I think the age is ok, maybe 12 year olds should be ablke to get paper rounds, but baby sitters should be at least 14-15 years of age. evry1 who has commented is right, there should be more jobs available to 14-15 year olds, but 11-13 year olds out there, there isnt really alot you can do as you are a bit too young (generalising) and probably wont be taken seriously in the work placement area. dont grow up too fast ppl!!

I think there should be more places of work available to under 16 year ols as we are as independent as them and need more than just 'pocket money' to survive on each week. However, we expect to earn this money ourselves without the help of parents or relatives. I am currently looking for weekend work and for something over the Christmas period and there is nothinbg available to under 16s. It's ludacris! PS, I live in Sunderland, in the United Kingdom. Why isn't the UK listed?

I think that the law is good. It is a reasnable amount of hours to work for each age. The only thing that would really help is to have more job opportunitites for those who are 14 and 15. In my oppinion if you are 16, you should get a job and stop asking your parents for some change so you could get things. You need to earn it! Just look for a good job and put all of your efforts into it so you could get paid good.
